Two Myanmar junta defectors from Matupi township joined the CDF-Matupi, a local armed resistance group, with their weapons on August 28, according to the CDF-Matupi news statement.
The two defectors are Sergeant Tun Zaw and Lt. Sergeant Wai Lwin, both from the Matupi-based Myanmar junta's Military Strategy Station. The armoury they brought along included MA 1, MA 2, a pair of grenades, and eight boxes of bullets totalling 350 rounds. In recognition of their defection, the two defectors are rewarded with 60 thousand Kyats each, the statement said.
As the Myanmar junta's offensives intensify against its citizens and unarmed civilians, many military and police personnel have joined the local armed resistance groups. An official of the National Unity Government (NUG) claims 3,236 military and 9,091 police personnel had defected as of February 2023, which excludes a thousand more who have simply walked away.
